Basically its in the title ,how about a wierd and original way of doing it.

It depends on when you want your monster to appear, who sees him first, how does he attack... etc.
Personally, I would have the monster attack several people off camera (maybe have a shot of the victim screaming, goes black, etc...) first to build up suspence.
Don't just bring out the monster and say "Well, Here it is!", frighten the audience with it.
Get the monster to jump out at the moment the audience least expects it.

hi..Well first I would say that there are 3 basics to a monster movie.
1. Monster info/background...the audience needs to know that there is a story or ledgend about the monster.
2. suspence building (think the tent shaking in Blair Witch) footprints, pieces of hair or other physical evidence of something weird....we don't yet see the monster but we know something is out there.
3. monster exposed. maybe start off with a quick shot of a claw pulling back some branches to spy on the victims. maybe an arm coming out of the darkness to snatch an unexpecting victim. but save the full body shots for the end. the other post is definately right, you need to build the suspence.
